Retinoids Vs Retinol: What’s the difference?

Both are vitamin A based products used to treat various skin conditions. They are topical skin care products that promote exfoliation and stimulation of collagen and elastin. Retinol is a natural form of Vitamin A and is available without prescription. It is milder than prescription strength retinoid and is found in many over the counter skincare products. The prescription version is a synthetic version of Vitamin A, and can only be sourced with a prescription.

What will prescription strength retinoid do?

It is a medication that treats acne, sun-damaged skin and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is a  type of Vitamin A that works deep within the skin. It is sold under various brand names.

Are there different types?

Prescription strength retinoids come in various strengths to meet different needs.

Do I need a prescription?

Yes. It cannot be bought over the counter. It can only be accessed by prescription.

How do I use prescription strength retinoid?

Apply around 1 pea-sized amount evenly to your face at night, as directed by your doctor. Avoid contact with eyes. Initially, use 1-2 nights per week, and increase slowly, as tolerated. Be cautious at more sensitive areas on the face. Do not use within one week of waxing, lasers or peels. Ensure you wear sunblock every day while you are using this product, as your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight.

When should I stop using prescription retinoid?

Discontinue use if hypersensitive to any ingredients. Do not use if skin is damaged or burnt.

Who should not use a prescription retinoid?

Anyone who is pregnant, planning pregnancy, or who is breastfeeding. You MUST be using reliable contraception if using a prescription retinoid.

Can prescription strength retinoid cause adverse reactions?

Many people who use it note increased redness and dryness as their skin adjusts to the treatment. Skin may also peel. This is a normal reaction and this is why you are recommended to start with very small doses, 1-2 times a week to allow your skin to learn to tolerate the product. If your skin becomes excessively red, swollen, blistered or crusted, stop treatment immediately.

Can I continue my normal skincare while using prescription strength retinoid?

You are recommended to not use any active ingredients (for example vitamin C or glycolic acids) on the same evening that you use prescription retinoid. It should only be applied at night. You should wear sunblock when using this product.

How do I store tretinoin cream?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain its efficacy.

How much does a prescription cost?

A prescription costs €45.

How long does it take to process my request for a prescription?

If deemed appropriate, a prescription will be sent to a pharmacy of your choice, via secure email, within 24 hours of assessment.

Does goandglow.ie supply the product prescribed?
